some flaws

the drumwork is great dn "ok" so far but nothing special to me due the lack of clear arrangement that seperates the parts and build the thing up. It really doesnt sound like a buildup at all because to me it just plays random drums yet right in place but not arranged in defined parts, its like 50seconds amen loops with effects and then again different amen loops with more sub. I can't see a clear drumline going on in the whole intro like there is no start, middle or ending intro part its all the same.

Try this: First rearrange the break and make a defined beat so u can layer the drums for the drop later. Use a Para EQ2 on the Break and turn the 60Hz and 300Hz all the way down to take out the lows. Next give the choirs more room and form a melody with them getting more intense in time to reach its climax at the 48th bar if you like and then play the choirs alone for 16 Bars to the final drop. For the drop layer a simple deep drum over the amen at like 60-80Hz and use a neutral sounding midhigh snare to finish the basic work. Your break is ready for the subline now that goes with the bass effects you already got, also work out a decent arrangement that stays interesting but is still as repetitive as possible for dnb without boring the listener. Don't play to many melody notes with the stabs. Hope that helps you.

Thaanks for the review aera, I just got lazy so I uploaded unfinished vers

what newgrounds needs...

... is to shut the fuck up. I say fuck what newgrounds "needs" itll only ruin what u stand for and what u want to express with ur music :/ Its like you make music but only a few ppl like it, so what do you do? cry for attention and change your style to get more followers??? or just give a shit and be yourself and do what you want... its funny somehow because this really reminds me in EA right now who think it is clever to ruin one or their best games ever (and EA usually produces like 4 crappy sport games evey new year) I talk about DEAD SPACE - After Resident Evil fucked up the Community with literally stopped being a SURVIVAL HORROR game and focusing more on shooter action and explosions dead space was our only hope after the lame new silent hill. And the games was so pantwetting I swear I played some hardcore horror games but I kinds got resistant to it in time. This games scared the living shit out of me :C I was sweating and shivering in some parts only because of the excelent sounddesign. Sadly the game still was no commercial breakthrough for EA and so they have decided to take out some of the horror elements and fill it with "really exciting action sequences" THATS BULLSHIT, they made the game so scary some ppl couldnt even finish it because it was just too hardcore for them. And now they want to take away what made the game big and what the name dead space stands for only to sell more copies!!! This only hurts the TRUE community who loved and supported the game how it is and EA gives a shit about them now. I wouldnt say anything now but if they ruin the game remember this: They traded its true spirit for money and whore the attention of the more casual action games community just to SELL - MORE - COPIES! They dont give a shit about US who love the horror genre and want the game to stay true to its strengts.

So, if others dont like Intros who gives a shit and if they don't like DnB who gives a shit and if they call it techno WHO gives a shit?! BE who you want to be, do what you want to do and you will find > true < followers sooner or later. Don't sell yourself...

SteakJohnson responds:

I'll not sell myself to NG aera dont worry. AND I LOVEd DEAD SPACE, I rented it and beat it in like a day, glorious game. Ha i showed it to my friends then they did the same. Lol the action sequences r gonna ruin it though. Thanks for the encouraging words tho. UpLOad some of those sick tracks that you showed me! (or atleast a preview!)

dm d d dm dmmm

Me love the vocals and the awesomeness on this track, very jungle -ish but nothing straight by the formular. It has its own balanced modern / oldskool mix. The Piano is great although I assume its a sample :P ENOUGH! Great song!

I went all Apex style on the drums though

repetitive but cool bass

I think the bassline has some potential, deffo just change the break and use different drums taht are more aggressive and dark. The samples you used for that would fit perfectly in a High Contrast Tune but not in a Noisia Track with this bassline imo. its dark vs. light and so it never gets anywhere. Also the kick is lacking punch and the whole neat is VERY repetitive and also overloaded with kicks :/ Less is more sometimes, change the drums and make a new sequence, turn the hihats down and exchange the samples (get away from the light, jungle hats)

Enough of these harsh words >:( The Bassline is great compared to the older ones, its different in sounds and rich of modulation but lacks a low end and feels like its only playing on the upper mid and high sections. That causes it to sound... empty and plain. It lacks... well.. "phat" if you know what I mean its just not kicking in, you have to give it more room.

Also DO NOT play dnb like a hiphop or pop beat (intro verse chorus verse etc.) its not that simple, make outstanding changes at the end of each 32 bars if you like, bass only, drum rolls, effects, soundsamples or vocals, Keep it changing and dont fall back into the first half again, its the same beat and same bassline mod over and over again besides the changes at 0:51 and 1:47

There is this nice videogame melody in the background ( also in the intro, could be trance) that is NICE and very CATCHY (1:04) but just doesnt fit in the idea of making a dark bassline with a happy jungle beat. I think you know how to produce good sound but not how to put the right parts together and honestly you produce so many songs even with your broken headphones and slow pc that I don't think you get the chance to "feel" them all cause you simply don't have enough time to focus on one track or you just put the stuff together and once you got somthing solid you upload it instantly on NG to let OTHERS tell you what they think of this 1-2 hours sit production. You have to listen to yourself first. I think you should start a serious tracks and work on others like this only as a sideline and check your big track every few days. Take a listen and you will find something to improve I promise, I am working on a huge track myself for like a afew months now and yet its still the same patterns and everything. I am just overworking my mixing and mastering and my break or chnage some EQ here and there a bit everytime I check it. Its little things that make the hole thing complete, the sound is excellent right now thanks to all the smal things I did in the past months and I can say this is the best sounding track every not only in mastering but also in its flow, everything matches it just flows man u know. Thats what I am talking about, you have to feel it...

sorry for any bad words here :,(

SteakJohnson responds:

Hey thanks, I dont mind the bad words bcauz theyre truthful words and I agree with them. I have started work on a big bad track and I cant wait to finish it lol, bass fits with that one much more and other things... Main things I have trouble with is the build up and beginning. Im pretty sure ppl lose interest in lotsa my songs b4 I can get them to the climax, so Im just gonna like you say, work hard on a beginning for awhile. Cant wait to hear your track btw (but take your time lol).

try this

i think this really has some potential, the melodies are great and chill, the drums are ok so far but could use some improvement (i'll get to that) and the mastering is impressive with one exception: First, I wanted to hear a stronger subbass here, just turn it up a bit it will sound much betetr believe me, don't be affraid of making any mistakes. Test different settings and pause a few days, then listen again and you will instantly hear which one is better and where you can improve.

The melodies are all great especialy at 1:12 it really gets me. Maybe you can use a strong Delay on the last note and fade the Delay in and out for ambient effects, modulate the Delay with a Ressonance Filter and Cutoff and you have a great Sound to back up your drums cause the main string gets boring after a while (also this is just a short a cut so you really have to change that in the final song). You need every kind of variation you can get!

The Kick Drum could use some more of the 60Hz Section, the punch is alright so far, if you want to go harder onit maybe you can try a string sidechain on the sub and give more room to a deeper kick sound without taking so much of the sub away, just max out the secay speed.

Now... try making a reese with a really low set high cut and modulate it so it sounds like, hm imaginge a deep low end frequency moving on the floor rolling over ;) Very minimal and creepy sounding in general but if you combine it with your break and adjust teh modulation and play it in the mayn string notes with some changes in the 4th section it would sound really awesome, I can really hear it now in my mind, think of it and maybe you find the idea worth to give it a try :D

And oh, NeverKnowWhatsNext you really sound like an idiot that way. You have no idea how to write a useful review or how to review a Drum and Bass piece in general, it is meant to be repetitive.

Jenni-Harry4eva3 responds:

Many, many, MANY great ideas that I hope to include in the final product :3 Thanks very much lol.

well best mixdown so far

from all 4 versions I heard now, this version sounds the best talking about the mastering. the drums linger a bit and lack some punch but its much better than the older versions. the happy melody sounds a bit out off place as it gets badass later at 0:57 and the reese sounds like the one you been using before in your latest uploads almost like you made it and like it so much that you use it all the time now. modulation is good and funky tho and I like the single 2 notes at 0:39 when the rest goes off. now get some new percussion samples (like the fl standard crash you use constantly) and work out the drums a bit and you can start making a 4 min track, meaning a 32 - 64 - 32 setup depending on what bpm u use

SteakJohnson responds:

hey thanks aera, just curious to add punch should I lower the attack on compression and add a tiny bit of gain?

WOW

I REALLY love this one man... I am listening for over 10min now and I really can't get enought of it. The composition is awesome and very intense and the well balanced break gives it a great overall feeling and I am not getting tired of it somehow even that it is the same break in general. The waiting for the beautiful vocals always keeps me listening. I really like the vocvals although I cannot understand what they say or maybe just because of that, gives it a mysterious and untouchable effect. You don't know what it is but you like it so much you just keep letting it go through you and be around you everywhere. flow man, flow. Im really feelin this one

also big ups for haywirehaywire, never heard of him a few weeks ago but he does awesome tracks, I will definately keep an eye on him

for me this makes up the last track a 100 percent - 5ed and downloaded

OK lets go

So man, long time no see uh? Old song this is but I like it so lets do deh reviews... I like the Piano SO much in the beginning its very atmospheric and creepy (playing L4D2 now) and also the odd melody comes in place once the drums kick in, cool effect on that. The Bass sounds aight but could use some more low end and modulation besides a bandpass going up and down and this glitch effect you put on it. BUT the choirs are epic as the last ones I heard from you, mucht better than the stuff I got here. (lol the "UH" vox just came in)

The way the bass blends with the piano at 2:56 is nicley done and also the short cutoff is a great variation, didnt expect that, Again epic choir sounding, we should do something together dude, I like them so much :3

The only flaws I could find here are the weak snare, its too tinny and distorted for my taste. The kick is finally here after one billion tracks where I could hardly hear your kicks. The mastering sounds and looks alright so far but the whole track could use some more sub I think and the bass again also would sound alot better with more variation and constant melodies besides the filters you used.

(wow the score is pretty low I see o.O)

Quarl responds:

meh, score means nothing.

noice :3

Since your last upload wasn't that good (YES I don't like it even that its part of the Rose Series!) this is a refreshing track and a new real NT tTtle. I never payed that much attention to the terminator music and I don't really recognise any melodies from the series so which is it??? The only things that really got my attention is the your beautiful aaaaaeeeeeaaaaauuuuuhuuuuu vocals and the tranc bell lead. To me the rest is common trance lol xD I can't judge on trance music cause I never reall got into the thing like im into hiphop or dnb. Buts its got variation and sounds solid... SO ITS ALRIGHT! And thats all from me ^^

Oh and the cut up vocal samles in the background later are nicely done.

Sorry mate

but I think you reall got to remaster it a fourth time :/

I listened to al three versions now and fo real you never hit the nail in every new mix, you problems here are 1. a lack of sub 2. way too much high end frequencies and 3. your basic drumkit which gets drowned by the hihats

The Track would sound great even with just the hihats remastered but giving it a decent simple sub with 3osc (if you work with fl studio) would also help to keep your hats down. I cannot barely hear the drums, the kick is weak and nearly absent and the snare sounds like a punchy hat :/ also once the reese comes in the volume raises too much like the reece is too loud or the rest is too quiet. You are great on synths and your drum sequencing is good but your drum mastering need slot of work.

also i liked the intro of this v1 more than this sudden start :/

SteakJohnson responds:

i would love to remaster the drums... but ive already resampled them to be put into the fruity slicer. and the original file is gone :(
plus every time I want to hear the song I have to export it(computer too slow) and test it on multiple platforms but thx 4 the review
